Biking

Information

The Pocatello Greenway and Wellness Complex offer a variety of paved trails where participants can enjoy the beauty and nature while they ride.  Another plus is the paths are fairly flat and car free.  If participants have their own bikes, they are welcome to bring those on the ride. From learning trail etiquette and building up your stamina, we will explore the Greenway trails together.

Adaptive Aids for Bikers

We currently have an inventory of 5 adaptive bikes!

• One kid hand-crank trike
• Two adult hand-crank trikes
• Two foot-pedal trikes

Who will most likely use what bikes?

• Hand-crank bikes are primarily used by individuals with lower-limb disabilities, paralysis or amputation
• Foot-pedal trikes are primarily used by individuals with physical, neurological or developmental conditions that impact balance.

For Visual or Hearing Impairments

We will be biking on trails that do not have cars.
• Participants will be riding with someone who can help them navigate.  Let you volunteer know what communication cues you need.
• We encourage you to bring a riding partner with you to be a backup pair of eyes or help with communication.

For intermediate to advanced riders

Barries Taco Tuesday Rides

Barries Ski and Sport has a Taco Tuesday Ride. Barries encourages adaptive riders to participate in this event.  Rides range from short to long.  You will have to become an Idaho Cycling Enthusiast (ICE) member ($10) to ride to cover the insurance requirements.   Call Barries for more details at (208) 232-8996.

Paddling

Information

Paddling will be held at the Wellness Center Complex lake.  The beach is fairly accessible and the lake is large enough to paddle around and enjoying being on the water.  This will be a share the equipment event.  When you are not paddling you can hang out on the beach can be fun too.

Adaptive Aids for Paddler

• Paddleboards:  The paddleboards will hold two people.  An introduction to paddling will be followed by a volunteer paddling with you until you feel confident enough to go by yourself.
• Sit on top kayaks:  Sit-on top kayaks are for those who have good balance and upper body strength but may not have the use of their lower legs.  These boats are stable and one can easily transfer in and out of them.
• Inflatable kayaks.  The inflatable kayaks hold two people and offer the most stability of any of the water craft.  A volunteer will start as the paddling partner.
• We have adaptive hand grips to help with holding the paddle if needed.
• Everyone will wear a PFD while paddling or swimming in the water.
• Participants must be able to right themselves while in the water or they will always be in a boat with a volunteer.
